Abbey's Art

Abbey loves art lately. When she was first old enough to start using crayons, I was so excited. I love to color and looked forward to coloring and doing other things with her. Unfortunately, Abbey hated coloring, drawing, scribbling, writing, etc. Instead she preferred to play with the crayons by lining them up, rolling them off the table, pretending they were Popsicles... you get the idea. This continued until last year during preschool when all of the sudden, she started drawing stick people. When I asked her about it, she just shrugged and said, "Levi showed me." Maybe that's all she needed all along- to watch a friend do something and decide it looked like fun- obviously if it is Mommy's idea it could not possible be any fun! Anyway, as I blogged about here, it is so cool to watch Abbey's artistic abilities continue to develop. She gets to go to art once a week at school and says is her favorite "special" class. Here are some of Abbey's latest projects and a few little updates.

Excited to work on her Halloween costume. Now that she is at school most days, I really try to do something one on one with her during Elliott's naptime on the weekends.

During the first month of school, Abbey drew about a million pictures like the one below. Always at least two members of our "stick" family, including Chico (curly tail), with everyone's names written all over in all capital letters. You will notice the cat on the left side... that is supposed to be Maxx, our cat that we have not had since 2005, who Abbey insists she remembers. Also please notice that it is held up with masking tape, which my children are obsessed with.

Fast forward about a month and see that our family is no longer made of sticks! And that Abbey is using lower-case letters to create her Nurse's Office sign for the "sick kids."

An art class creation

Abbey's "Monster Pumpkin." She decided she was not happy with it so we cut out a new shape and she gave it a cat face, complete with pipe cleaner tail. I still like the "Monster."

And here we have Paper Abbey. She is a life sized cutout that we decorated at home. Some of the kids brought in their cutouts with real clothes on! Ours is all paper, from her blond ponytail to her blue Crocs.

At school they added internal organs to the back of their cutouts! Now Paper Abbey can use her paper brain to learn about her paper heart and lungs.

Her teacher tells me that though she is quiet, she does participate and I know she has friends. I actually had the opportunity to help in her classroom for a little while today while they worked on math, using all different "manipulatives" and it was so cool. I have even more respect for her teacher- and all the rest of you awesome teachers out there!
